Get excited Denver!! The 2nd annual Modernism show is coming back this weekend to the National Western Complex.

Lots of great activities such as “Vintage Voltage”, which will showcases old electronics, tv’s etc, Miss Modernism pagent, Arapahoe Acres garden tour tickets on sale, and lots of retro furniture and accessories to peruse.

The fun begins on Friday August 27th with the VIP party.  The ticket price of $35.00 for this event allows for all weekend access, open bar, entertainment and special guests from 5-7pm. If the VIP ticket price is a bit hefty on your wallet, then go for the preview party $15.00  from 7-10pm to see the hula girls, Miss Modernism pagent and more.

Divino Wines on South Broadway threw it’s annual celebration of Spring, Planet Pink, a few weeks ago and I was there to document the fun.

Planet pink showcased 75 rose’ wines from many different regions of the world such as France, Italy and of course, the U.S.A. 

Attendees of this event go all out to show their love of the pink by dressing up in amazing outfits from pink bathrobes, pink socks/underwear combos and even pink balloons masquerading as pink grapes. 

 As the owner, Dave, reminds us “No Pink, No Drink”.

I visited with Chef Jeff Osaka, owner of Twelve Restaurant today in Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood.

Upon arrival at Twelve Restaurant, I was greeted by one of his friendly staff members who escorted me into Jeff’s kitchen to begin the interview.

Jeff was in the middle of preparing the daily special of freshly made Pappardelle pasta with green peas, braised rabbit and mushrooms.

The pasta is made fresh daily in his organized and sparklingly clean kitchen.

In addition to the pasta, bread was being baked in the industrial ovens. Jeff was like a proud papa showing off his children to me as he displayed his oven baked bread.

Hopefully, the Cinco de Mayo crowd looking for an alternative to the Mexican food everywhere else in town found his menu last night.

The food looked and smelled delicious, making me want to stay longer for dinner.

I definitely will be booking a trip back for dinner soon.

Jeff told me that his restaurant is named Twelve because he offers 12 different menus throughout the year.

This idea helps Twelve generate repeat clientele as they are always treated to new and special dishes throughout the year.

Jeff grew up in Los Angeles and started his adventures in the culinary arts in San Francisco under the direction of Chef Bradley Ogden of One Market restaurant.

This experience grew his love of providing fresh/seasonal menu items which he has implemented here in Denver.  Lucky us.

Modern in Denver magazine hosted their spring issue’s launch party at Bulthaup’s Kitchen showroom  in early April 2010. 

Bulthaup kitchen design showroom offered up their amazing space  in the Denver’s Golden Triangle neighborhood for the night. 

 The event drew a diverse crowd of Denver’s design community of  local artists, architects, writers and entreprenuers.  The event was buzzing from the moment the doors opened. 

 A FREE copy of the Modern in Denver spring issue was available to the attendees that evening.

Jeff Osaka of Twelve Restaurant provided samples of his English Pea and Vanilla soup which was featured in the magazine newest column, Ingredients. 

Kimberly Graham of Go Layer Cake marketing  interviewed Jeff and composed the written words describing the incredible soup. 

You can enjoy more of Jeff”s inspired recipes at his local Denver restaurant, Twelve Restaurant.  Additional   hors d’oeuvres were provided by the Kitchen Mistress, Virginia.

The hob-nobbing included meeting Darrin Alfred, Denver Art Museum’s  Associate curator of Graphic Design  and William Logan,  the Editor in Chief of Modern in Denver Magazine. 

William has graciously  invited  all of us to his next issue’s  event which will be posted on the Modern in Denver magazine website.

LIVE Iron Pour presented by The  University of Colorado Denver’s College of Arts and Media HOT sculpture program.

Location: Dry Ice Factory, 3300 Walnut Street, Denver, CO  80205

Time: 2pm-8pm  ( The real fun begins after dark)

UCD’s  College of Art and Media sculpture program is hosting this year’s LIVE Iron Pour at the Dry Ice Factory located at 3300 Walnut in the River North Art District.  The fun begins at 2:00pm and lasts until 8pm.  Stop by early to create a cast tile of your own design.

Students from UCD’s HOT sculpture program fire up the furnaces where they will tend to the iron all day as it is being turned into a liquid subtance.  After dark watch as the red, hot  molten iron will be poured into preformed casts made from ceramic shell and bonded sand molds.  As dusk approaches the atmosphere gets more and more exciting as you realize that the time is coming where  melted iron will be poured from the furnances into the molds. This is a visually stunning experience for young and old alike. 

This is event is free and open to the public.  Come and enjoy this rare opportunity to see how sculptures are made from iron.

I love Lucky Strike bowling.  The  upscale atmosphere, the bar, the food and the comfy couches make bowling hip again.  If the last time you went bowling was a few years ago,  you may remember nasty looking shoes, sticky floors, chain smokers (although maybe this part is gone due to new smoking regs but not sure) and PBR on tap. That type of bowling is not really conducive to a romantic evening or even a pleasant one.  Lucky strike broke the mold for bowling alleys.  It is clean, big screen tv’s above the lanes, hi-tech scoring machines, newer shoes, nice floors and small lounge areas where you can talk and enjoy a nice meal.  Lucky Strike has a couple of locationsaround the Denver Metro areas.  Try it out. I think you might like it.

Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science is hosting it’s first Science Lounge program tomorrow night Feb. 18, 2010.

This program is for everyone over 21 yrs. old and offers music provided by   ” The House Band to the Universe”.

This event offers  you the opportunity to  enjoy a talk  by Astrobiologist, David Grinspoon, PhD and Space Scientist,Dr. Ka Chun Yu, PhD.

These two scientist will take us on a mind-bending journey through space and time  looking  for clues to life.  As part of the fun, you will be encouraged  to create your own alien life form.  After the lecture share your life form with other attendess and mingle with the band  while enjoying a beverage from the cash bar.

This event takes place in the Gates Planetarium where we will be transported through space and time through a variety of digital visuals accompanied by live music.  This event is offered  tomorrow night starting at  6:30pm-9pm.

Denver is a beer town.  We love our beer.  We are the host city for The Great American Beerfest which is a huge tourist draw to our fine city every fall.

I must admit I’ve lived here for 15 years and I just learned about the monthly tappings of freshly brewed beer at the Rock Bottom Brewery.  What a great idea. Somehow I have been missing out on all this fun for years.

It was quite a packed house the night I ventured out to see what this tapping thing was all about. I watched as the Brewmaster climbed onto the bar to welcome all the guests and staff to the monthly tapping of a new brew.  Between the hours of 6-6:30 on a selected Thursday night the bar serves as many free beers as you can drink.  Feel free to sign up for their e-newsletter for more information of happenings at the Rock Bottom Brewery.

Calling all skiers and non-skiers to downtown Denver this  weekend!  The 1st ever Apres Ski Party is being held  in celebration of Denver’s 1st ever hosting of the SIA (snow industry trade show).  This tradeshow is  one of the USA’s biggest snow tradeshows held every January. 

Find yourself enjoying all the fun events beginning at Skyline Park where you can watch the 2010 Winter X games streaming live from Aspen/snowmass  on giant movie screens.  Show starts at 5pm on Friday and Saturday night.

If you are more of an early bird head on down to the Denver Pavillions where you will find a 20′ LED screen playing Warren Miller movies while local artist, Stephen DeOrio, creates a 3d version on the pavement of a winter mountain vista using chalk as his medium of choice.

More that 15 restaurants will be offering food and drink specials to the delight of the convention attendees and us locals.  One sure crowd pleasing venue will be Katie Mullen’s Irish pub. They will have live bands, giveways and lots of food and drink specials for the SIA event.  Breckenridge Ballpark club will be having FREE beer sampling  from 5-6pm all weekend.  See all the details of this event on their Apres Ski Website link. 

Don’t tell me you don’t have anything to do this weekend.  Have fun, be safe and ride the light rail to enjoy this event if you are planning on drinking all of the drink specials.
